Storytelling in the Imaginary Enclave

In conjunction with Brenda Joy Lem’s exhibition Homage to the Heart, the Richmond Art Gallery presented two storytelling events by local poet, author, and founder of the Asian Canadian Writers' Workshop, Jim Wong-Chu.    "Storytelling with Jim Wong-Chu" took place on May 7, 2011.

Storyteller and historian Jim Wong-Chu shared personal and historical tales relating to local Chinese-Canadian history. The program included stories on subjects such as the Chinese Lepers colony on D'arcy Island, the 1907 Riots in Vancouver's Chinatown, Bing Kee Street (the only street named after a Chinese person in Naniamo B.C.), Chinese House Boys, and China Mary.

In conjunction with Asian Heritage Month 2011, Jim Wong-Chu shared short stories and poems reflecting personal and historical events from Chinese-Canadian history in BC for groups as they come through the Gallery.
