Raised in Chinatown with Donna Chan, Peter Joe, and Elwin Xie

Raised in Chinatown delves into the stories of youths forging their own identities as Chinese Canadians from the 1910s to 1960s. Scouts, martial arts, drill team, sports, church, lion dance, choir—these activities are a reminder that while it was their parents who crossed an ocean, these youths pioneered what it means to be Canadian.

This companion event features the memories of three fascinating individuals who grew up in the neighbourhood.
  • Donna Chan captained the Chinese Girls Drill Team
  • Elwin Xie was raised behind the counter of his parents’ Union Laundry
  • Peter Joe turned his family’s business Sunrise Tofu into a mainstream staple
