Following the Brush — The Art of Zuihitsu Writing with Keiko Honda

Zuihitsu—“following the brush”—is a thousand-year-old Japanese literary form built on association rather than argument. One thought moves naturally into the next without needing justification: an observation, a memory, a complaint, a moment of tenderness, all in the same breath and without apology.

In this hands-on workshop, a brief introduction to the tradition is followed by guided writing exercises exploring concepts like okashi (delight in the small and curious) and mono no aware (the tender ache of passing beauty). No experience with writing or Japanese literature required—everyone is welcome.
